The HP Laserjet printer series recently celebrated 25 years as one of the world's leading printers. The company didn't overtly mark the occasion, but in the commercial printer business, 25 years is a long time to be selling printers and toner cartridges around the world.

HP Sells Over 100 Million Laserjets

That's a lot of replacement toner cartridges. Laserjets have moved on considerably since they were first released in 1984, and although HP's printer range is now enormous, there are still a lot of Laserjets in offices and homes around the globe, and the company is continuing to produce new models and upgrades to both the printers and the related toner cartridges. The Laserjet series is credited with playing a part in reducing cost and increasing availability of printers for businesses of all sizes and to the home owner - making quality computing and printing an affordable option. It's estimated that over 100 million Laserjet printers have been sold in the model's 25-year history - HP's most successful product ever.

Toner cartridges More Affordable

HP wasn't the first company to produce a laser printer, but it was the first company to make if affordable whilst retaining good quality print. Previous laser printers were heavy and incredibly expensive - tens of thousands of dollars - and so the Laserjet series with its much lower price tag and affordable replacement toner cartridges was an immediate hit. Even HP didn't expect the printer to become as iconic as it has - the Printer Command Language or PCL developed for the original Laserjet is still the standard for all laser printers in production today. A comparison by the Idaho Statesman, the local newspaper to HP's Boise facility where the Laserjet was developed, shows that the original Laserjet cost $3,495, weighed 70lbs and had an annual energy cost of $134. A 2009 Laserjet costs just $99, weighs 10lbs and its energy costs over the year are a miniscule $4.45. What a difference 25 years can make.
